4 Writing Steps - Part 1 (Idea Generation)
Today we're going to discuss the first step in the 4 Steps for Good Writing.
The first step is: Idea Generation!
Figuring out what to write can often be the hardest part of the writing process,
so it can help to begin by asking yourself some questions.
Firstly, consider "What are my motives for writing?"
To determine your motives, ask yourself whether you're answering a question,
clarifying conflicting or contradictory views,
or challenging the standard opinion.
Also consider who your target audience is.
Once you know your motives for writing, it's time to generate ideas!
There are two methods that we're going to discuss today for idea generation.
First is called, "Free Writing."
To do this, choose a topic - however broad - and set a 10 minute timer.
Then, begin writing in an essay-style format.
Don't overthink, and don't edit.
Just simply focus on getting down as much as you can, and getting used to the writing process.
The second method is called, "Webbing."
For this method, start by writing down your topic in the center of your page
and then begin connecting associated words or ideas and building off of them to create a web.
Again, don't overthink.
Your goal is to come up with as much as you can now so that you can edit your ideas later.
