And today I'm taking you through my three step decluttering process so you can begin to declutter
quickly and efficiently.
First, note that decluttering is a process, and it will take time to achieve the results
that you want to see.
There's no need to declutter and perfectly organize your home in the next hour or even
by tomorrow.
Chances are things have accumulated over a period of years, so it's unreasonable to
expect to turn that around in a day or less.
Take it in small, manageable steps.
Declutter your home by having a plan of attack in place.
Declutter systematically by determining how much time each day or week you have to devote
to the process.
Once you know how much time you have set aside then start with a manageable to tackle area.
Ideally, this should be a high traffic area or space where you spend a lot of your time.
By starting in an area of your home that you see a lot, you will be reminded of your progress
daily.
Seeing a decluttered space regularly demonstrates that you can do it and spurs you on to do
more decluttering.
Which is what we want!
This is a quick win that sparks enthusiasm for the decluttering process.
I'll teach you how to declutter in three easy steps plus I've linked in the description
below to a list of places for where to dispose of or donate the items you know longer need
or want in your household.
Alright, let's get our declutter on!
Here's how to begin decluttering your home in 3 Easy Steps.
Decluttering Step 1: Select
Choice where to start.
Pick one high traffic room or area, to begin with, so that you are cleaning up a space
that is noticeable.
It's important to start with an area of your home that you see daily.
When you make progress in this area, you will be reminded of your decluttering efforts every
time you see it.
Hopefully, by having tackled one space that serves as a daily reminder to keep going because
you can do this!
Once you've selected where to start, then determine how much time you will devote to
the decluttering effort.
Maybe you can fit in 10 minutes a day right after you get home from work.
Or perhaps you have an hour on Saturday morning before everyone else gets up in the household
to spend on decluttering.
Whatever schedule you decide on make sure to include it on your to-do list or calendar.
Stick to the plan.
Like everything else you accomplish in a day, a week, a month, or even in a year; taking action or following
through on your plan is the only way to achieve any goal.
Once you've selected where and when to start, go around that space in a clockwise circle.
Pick a place to start then work around the area pulling out everything you own.
Save the midd le part of the room for last.
As you pull out the items, we move on to the next step which is…
Decluttering Step 2: Sort
As you pull the items out sort into three initial piles.
We will break these piles down further in the next step.
For now, you want to have three piles, one for keep, giveaway, and dispose of.
The keep pile we will go through space by space.
The other two piles (giveaway and dispose of) will be stored in an out of the way area
and will be adding to those as you make your way through the entire home.
Set up an area in your garage or area of the home that can be sorting central while you
work on decluttering your entire home.
Have a bin, bag, or other receptacles for the giveaway pile and one for the dispose
of pile.
As you declutter a new area of your home keep adding to these two piles so that when you've
made it all the way through your home, you then take these items all out of your house.
As for the keep pile, you will sort through it, area-by-area because these are the things
you're using, have meaning, or beautify your space.
Next, the keep pile will be sorted into two sub-piles.
From the items you've determined you want to keep, decide if these things should remain
in the area you just decluttered or if they are best kept in another part of the house.
Think about how you want this space of your home to function.
Keep items in the space that help it function in a way that works best for you and your
family.
A note about sentimental items because these can be especially hard to get rid of.
Things that hold significant meaning can be the most difficult to part with.
When determining whether or not to let go of sentimental items take an extra moment
to really think about the significance of the items.
Has it served its purpose?
Do you need it to remind you of that person or event?
Did you even know you had the item?
Allow yourself a designated space to keep sentimental items, but once that container
is full, you either get rid of something to make more space for a new addition or you
let go of the item you thought about keeping.
Designate a box or storage bin for sentimental items is a way to contain and control that clutter.
Once everything from an area has been sorted move on to the next step.
Decluttering Step 3: Place
As you move through the process of decluttering put items where they belong.
Move the giveaway/donate items as well as the items to be disposed of to their respective
piles in sorting central station, which was designated in the previous step.
You won't do anything with these piles until you have made your way through the entire
house.
Once you've decluttered the whole house, that's when it's time to donate and dispose of
the items so you're not always running back and forth throughout the process of decluttering.
For the items you are keeping, determine how they will be used and where they will it go.
Some items will go back into the area you just decluttered while other items will be
moved to more appropriate locations throughout your home.
The key is to keep and place items into your home with intention.
This means if you've chosen to keep an item it serves a purpose.
That purpose can be to add beauty to your space or serve a more practical purpose.
You decide what will enrich your life by keeping it and what can be let go of.
Once you've completed the entire home declutter process it's time to donate, giveaway and
dispose of (or recycle) the two big piles that remain in sorting central area.
Dispose of or recycle the items that have no use to you or others.
Throw out any trash.
If you have larger items, find a dumpster or pickup service that will accept large items.
Recycle everything that can be recycled.
Figuring out where and how to safely recycle items can be tricky.
That's why I've linked below to a list of places to take your recyclable a lot of common household items.
Donate or giveaway items that are still usable and in good condition.
Many organizations take anything you might have for donations.
Look for local thrift shops and nonprofits in your area that could use items you no longer need or want.
By following these three easy steps to begin decluttering your home you'll take control
over your stuff, instead of your stuff controlling you.
Remember select where to start in your home.
Sort the items in that area into keep, giveaway, and dispose of piles.
Then place the items you are keeping into their appropriate location in your home, and
donate, recycle, or throw away what you are letting go of.
Declutter quickly by choosing a high traffic area that is visible
to make getting started easier.
