HOW TO DESIGN ONLINE COURSES (6 steps)

start creating your own product you have to make sure that it is something that people
want to buy. The digital product that I'll be focusing
on in this video is online courses. I'm focusing on online courses because they have
the greatest revenue potential than all the others AND it's a good source of passive
income. Now, the level of passivity –break for funny pronouncing of the word passivity
- depends on how involved you will be in the process of helping your students, for instance,
coaching, but you can control that. The first step in creating an online course
is to find a topic. If you don't already know what you can teach then it's very important
to take time strategizing your subject matter. The best way to determine a topic is to follow
what I call The Knowledge Pyramid. The knowledge pyramid is a part of the expert
formula methodology that I've created. In essence, the expert formula using the knowledge
pyramid is a way to easily convey how you can become a thought leader in any niche without
needing to have amazing credentials. First thing is to write down a list of all
of your interests and/or skills. If you don't think you have any skills then think of things
that you find yourself researching or that you spend a lot of time doing. Write down
as many, hobbies, interests, skills, as you can.
Out of that list, pick the ones that you feel that people are desperate to learn about.
In other words, choose the ones that people would be willing to pay to learn about. You
can even search google and Amazon to see if people are already paying for books or manuals
about it. Cross off the interests that can't be monetized.
Now, this is where the knowledge pyramid comes into play. I want you to draw a triangle like
this on a piece of paper. Then draw four lines going across it. Now write the numbers 1 through
5 alongside the pyramid where 1 is starting from the bottom. Out of the remaining interests
that you have I want you to think about the level of knowledge that you have about each
one. From a level of 1 to 5, where 1 is the least knowledge and 5 is the most, where does
your knowledge fall for each interest? Write it down.
Notice how on the pyramid the levels of knowledge and how the pyramid gets smaller towards number
5, the most knowledge. This is because there are always less people who know everything
there is to know about a certain topic. Now, for each interest you have and the level
of knowledge associated with it, pinpoint where it is on the pyramid. The levels or
level underneath it, indicate where your ideal audience will fall in their level of knowledge
about your topic. You don't need to worry about targeting anyone who knows more than
you, in fact, you don't have to be a genious in your chosen niche in order to make money.
There will always be people out there who know less than you and are willing to pay
to learn from you. If you're interested in more information about how to become a
thought leader, I talk more about this in my video "how to become an expert" that
I'll link below in the description. Now, make sure that the subject that you choose
has all the components of the expert formula and that there is a great need to learn. The
larger the audience's problem is as it pertains to your subject, the more they will be willing
to learn and the more you can charge. And if someone already has a course on your
chosen idea, that's a good thing! It means that there is demand for your information
and people are already buying into it! Always remember that people buy courses because
they have a problem that needs to be fixed! Step 2 in creating an online course is one
that most course creators who fail never do and that it…test your idea!
One way you can test your idea is by creating a mini course or a sample version of your
course that you can send to your audience via email. No need to create any slides or
record any videos or voiceovers. All you're doing is sharing the outline of your course
content and building your email list in the process.
Another great way to validate your idea is to pre-sell your course. Pre-selling, in my
opinion, is the best way to validate your course because it requires people to pay you
up front. It's easy for people to sign up for a free mini-course, but when you charge
people to be the first to take a course that hasn't even been created yet, you'll get
a much better indication of whether or not your course will actually sell when it's
complete. You can get people to sign-up for your upcoming
course by creating an early interest page where you get people to opt-in by leaving
their name and email. On this page make sure that you go into more detail about your course
and how what you teach is going to solve their problems. Once you get folks on your email
list you can send them a checkout page where they make their purchase. How you price your
pre-sale offer depends on how much you are going to price your full course. However,
it makes sense to make the pre-sale offer much cheaper.
Step 3 on how to create an online course is to create a course outline
It's very hard to come up with content for an online course without first putting down
your thoughts into an outline. Think of your outline as your course curriculum. What are
you going to be covering inside of your course? First, think of the problem that you're
going to solve. What are all the steps needed to solving that problem. Your course should
be structured in a way that brings your students from pain to the promised land that includes
your promise as the expert. You're essentially leading them to this place in their lives
where you know they want to be. Think of each section or module as one individual
step towards their desired outcome. What I like to do is break down my course into individual
milestones that my students can achieve throughout their journeys. This way they're able to
see their progress as they go. Don't pack too much information into a single
module. Each section should deal with one step at a time.
Step 4 on how to create your very own online course is create your course content. Now
this is a step that most course creators get hung up on, but it's not as important as
the first three steps believe it or not. As long as you are delivering the content in
a comprehensive format it really doesn't matter if you choose to create videos or slides.
The way I like to format my courses is using slides through PowerPoint. What I do is create
my slides along with a notes section where I write out my script. When I'm finished
with each module, I record my voice using the "record slideshow" option inside of
PowerPoint. You're able to read your notes while recording yourself through this feature.
When I'm finished with the module, I create a mp4 video of it by exporting my presentation.
The reason why I record one module at a time is because I don't want to have to export
a huge file, since my courses tend to be quite long.
So this is how I do it, but I know a lot of people prefer video. Some people may even
choose to include both video and slide presentations to their courses. I'm not going to go into
creating video for online courses in this video, but there are tons of other videos
here on Youtube that go much deeper into it. Another important component of your course
content are your module worksheets. Your worksheets should be in PDF format so it's easy for
your students to download. I like using Canva to create mine. Canva offers tons of free
worksheet templates that you can use to make your course content as professional as possible.
Now, after you're finished recording your course content and creating your worksheets,
you're going to need a place to host your course. Many course creators use services
like Teachable to house their courses, but I prefer a platform called Thrive Themes.
Thrive Themes is only $19 a month for a full membership which is less than most course
hosting platforms out there AND you can use Thrive to create landing and sales pages for
your business as well as amazing opt-ins like quizzes to boost your conversions. If you're
interested in using Thrive Themes for your business check out the link in the description.
Now for Step 5 in creating an online course, set your price.
For the sake of time I have created a little pricing table that you can download that'll
tell you exactly how to price your course. This is a very simple table, but it'll help
you tremendously so that you're not second guessing your pricing. And don't worry you
don't have to opt-in to download it. Step 6 in creating an online course, launch
the thing! And finally we've come to the part that
most of us dread and that is sales. Ugh who loves to sell? Right? No one enjoys feeling
like a sleezy salesly predator. But the great thing about the digital age is that you don't
have to be sleezy to sale stuff! In fact, the process of selling is easier than ever.
There soooo many ways to sell stuff online that I don't have time to put all of them
into this video, so I'll go over my favorite way to increase your email list and your conversions
all at the same time and that is through free lead magnets! A lead magnet or opt-in is usually
a free offer that your audience has to give you their name and email address to receive.
It can be a simple downloadable checklist or mini e-book or even audio training or a
quiz, but the most effective lead magnet that pairs nicely with an online course is a webinar.
The reason why webinars are so highly converting is because it gives you, the expert, an opportunity
to show off your knowledge about your chosen topic. It also gives you a great platform
to sell in the most effective way. Your webinar should be structured in a way similar to how
your online course will be structured, where you take your students from pain to the promised
land only for your webinar you'll be taking them from pain to the promise. And that promise
is whatever your course will deliver for them if they buy now! You always need that call
to action, CTA at the end. If you're excited to start building your
online asset give me a "word up" in the comments!
