The first three steps on your IR35 journey

[Music] welcome to the IR35 Hub, where we'll be putting all of the useful information you need to navigate the changes of the IR35 legislation in 2020. My name is Louis and for all those eager to get ahead of the game in their preparations, this video is going to be talking about three top tips to help you get started. Step one is all about understanding IR35; how it currently operates, what's changing, what impact that's going to have to you as a business and what effort is going to be required for you to become compliant as of 2020. Now, to help with that we've got two free tools on our IR35 hub. We've got an impact assessment tool which is quick and easy and takes five minutes, or we have a 30-minute IR35 consultation with a resident expert. Step two: once you've got a good understanding of the IR35 legislation and how it's going to impact your business, the next step would be to create a working group within the business. The role of this working group would be to make the right decisions to minimise risk and to capitalise on any opportunities that arise. It's absolutely vital that you have the right people working together to get you ready for the changes. There are many stakeholders involved in the engagement of contingent workers so we suggest HR, procurement, finance, legal, IT, internal comms and any frontline business teams. Step 3: so once you've understood the legislation and you've built a team to tackle these changes now you need to take the next step and start the process of identifying your total contractor population. Now, this could take up a lot of time and effort as it means asking yourself these types of questions: who are they? Where do they work? Who manages them? How are they engaged? What systems are we capturing these people on? And, depending on the size of your workforce, this could be a really huge exercise to undertake so it means asking your working group: "do we do this ourselves or do we seek a partner to help us?". As you can tell it's a bit of a journey to become IR35 compliant but rest assured if you take these three steps you will stay ahead of the game.
