8 Reasons Why Drivers Fail - Pass Your Road Test 1st Time

eight reasons why drivers fail a road test. This isn't just for passenger
vehicles, this is for CDL vehicles. All of this is applicable as well. Stick around,
we'll be right back with that information.
[INTRO & UPBEAT MUSIC]
Hi there smart drivers. Welcome back. Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you
today about 8 reasons why both passenger vehicle, CDL drivers, motorcycle
riders and others who are taking a road test--it doesn't matter what class of
license--are unsuccessful on a road test. So if you're just tuning in, let us know
where you're tuning in from in the world, what class of licenses you're going for.
If you are going for a CDL license, or a motorcycle license, or what not. so be
Naturals in from Minnesota Edgar's here hello Edgar Stacey's getting her license
she's just 35 and getting her license congratulations and she's tuning in from
New Hampshire the north north eastern part of the United States there ramesha
is from Brampton Cody's here Tommy's here from Oshawa lots of lots of people
all over the world here and Jonathan is in from New York City that's excellent
and Corey is here bricks for wheels that's Corey Corey is the moderator so
if you start using profanity and those types of things we either delete your
comment or two and you go out so we try to keep it as clean as possible it is a
PG channel actually it's not a PG parental guidence we don't need parental
guidance we just ro Oh respect each other here and the channel is very much
about empowerment so if you're just tuning in new to smart drive test
welcome to smart drive test smart drive test helps new drivers get a license
veteran drivers to remain crash free and CDL drivers to start a career as a truck
or bus driver so that's what we do here Belinda's here from Toronto and said
that they had snow last night and actually yesterday and today I drove
down to Vancouver Island over the mountain
and came back took the ferry it's quite a long journey and no snow in the
mountains it was all clear and it's actually pretty good because the speed
limit on the trans-canada highway between here and the coast as it's
called is 120 kilometres an hour so you can tootle along at 130 kilometres an
hour which is about 85 89 85 80 miles an hour which is you know pretty good speed
it's pretty challenging for the buggy so it's all great Edgar thank you so much
for that super chat and super chat is available as well if you have any
questions and you definitely want me to get to it if I don't get to your
question it's not because I'm ignoring you it's because they're the live
streams tend to get pretty busy once the live streams get over 30 or 40 people
there's a lot of people here on the channel so ask your question again if I
miss you or just remind me to have a look and I'll see what I can do
Logies running from Spain excellent Pedro is getting a CDL passenger
endorsement excellent and Tommy is saying that they had five to ten snow
ten centimetres five to ten centimetres is about three or four inches of snow in
Oshawa so yes and Jonathon 100k campaign is going well we're gonna have a draw
this week for the one of the gas cards so we're
gonna do that this week and get that up and yes so that's great all about
vehicles hello Stacey I find your instruction awesome you're easy to
understand and that's really great that's what we strive to do here Stacey
to help you get a license and learn to drive and be crash free that's really
what we're what we're striving to do and it's also about empowerment and helping
people you know not just in driving but sort of all things in life because
driving is really you know kind of a metaphor for life is this at least the
way I like to see it so that's great Catalunya Spain that's excellent I'll
have to look that up after the live stream there and see where you are in
Spain Jonathan yeah don't get nervous take deep breaths relax be natural yeah
and Corey Jonathan it's a it's the gas card is a hundred
our gas cart so wherever you are in North America you're gonna get your in a
draw for $100 gas card all right so without further ado we're
gonna move over to the PowerPoint presentation Jonathan is here I don't I
did see Colin there in prior to the going live here and Corey as well will
answer any questions you got so they'd be a discussion going on but I'm gonna
pop over to the PowerPoint presentation and go through that just for people that
want to stick around that and then afterwards I'll answer any questions
that you have about getting your license and passing a road test so eight reasons
you might fail a road test one of the first reasons and this isn't really on
the list of reasons that I'm going to give you why you potentially could fail
your road test is first impressions did you take a shower did you cut your did
you not cut your hair but did you comb your hair did you shave you know do your
makeup those types of things before you go down obviously I'm speaking to women
I'm half men yes you could if you're Eddie Izzard you're gonna need to do
your makeup before you go to do your road test cleaned your vehicle and did a
pre trip inspection and Cory will put up the video for you on the pre trip
inspection that you need to do on your vehicle even if you're going with the
driving school insist that you and the driving exam or do a pre trip inspection
on your vehicle before you show up for your road test because this is going to
be first impressions every driving center that you go to take your test is
going to do a mini pre trip inspection they're going to get you check the
lights in and check the horns and you're gonna make sure the seatbelts work and
that everything is safe for the examiner because if your vehicle is not safe and
not up to Highway Traffic Tech Specs they're gonna deny you a road test for
example if you have a brake light out something that could easily be fixed
before you get out and show it for your road test they're gonna deny you a road
test you're not gonna be able to go out on your road test you have to reschedule
and come back which is a real inconvenience because you're all kind of
prepped up for it and you want to go and then something happens on the vehicle
and they deny you your road test so make sure that your vehicle is in tip-top
shape get it cleaned up vacuum it out and those types of things before you go
down all right so for those of you new to smart drive
test I'm Rick Auguste I do have a PhD I was a truck driver a long-haul truck
driver through most of the 1990s I ran Freight from Ontario Canada into the
United States mostly everything east of the Mississippi I ran a lot of New York
Florida the Carolinas and the northeastern US as well the New England
and so I did that in the 1990s 1997 I became a licensed commercial driving
instructor my expertise is in air brakes actually but I was a driving
rehabilitation specialist as well so I helped people with disabilities who had
strokes had had injuries and those such things return to driving and taught
people to drive with hand controls and whatnot 2006 I graduated from the
University of Melbourne with a doctorate in legal history and for those you may
or may not know that is the study of policing courts and the prisons and my
expertise is in policing as it relates to traffic and while I was going to
university I drove bus for ground this is a picture of me in 2002 sitting in
the bus with my uniform on and I still had hair at the time so that's me okay
new video this week how to accelerate using the left centre turning lane if
you're turning from a minor road onto a major road and you need to use that as a
staging area to get over to the right-hand lanes as well I created a
playlist have a look at this playlist here as well and Corey will put the link
up for you as well if you're going for road tests now I do not encourage I
discourage you to do this on a road test if the examiner tells you to do it you
need to decide before you get out for your road test whether it's legal or not
there I need to check into this but one of the smart drivers said that it's
illegal in some of the states so you need to know whether you can do this in
some of the states or not but I discourage this for new drivers or any
drivers that have trepidation or anxiety around driving because it is
a complex maneuver and I say that in the video so have a look at that okay
first reason for failing a road test you're too cautious you're not driving
the speed limit you're not doing the proper speed for going around corners
and those types of things and if you are too cautious on your road test you're
not going when there's sufficient gap and whatnot it simply says to the
examiner that you haven't done enough preparation to take your road test and
you haven't done enough preparation to drive and be safe on the roadway and be
predictable and one of the things one of the exercises that will make you a
better driver overall a slow speed maneuvers yes
7/8 of the road test is in a forward motion but it is that 1/8 the slow speed
maneuvers reverse stall parking to point reverse turn a three-point turn and
parallel parking all these are difficult maneuvers to do and learn and they take
time and they're not sexy and any stretch of the imagination maneuvers to
do however these will improve your overall driving and teach you where your
vehicle is in space and place and how to manage speed and how to manage space
which are the key fundamental components of any road test so you can't be too
cautious you need to manage speed you need to get the vehicle up to the posted
speed limit or the flow of traffic whichever is less as quickly as possible
and you need to you know do turns with confidence and those types of things so
if you're too cautious that simply says to the examiner that you haven't done
enough work and you're not ready for your road test so make sure that you do
the work do the practice and get as much driving as you can before you go for
your road test reason number 2 for failing a road test is you don't have
control of you don't have mastery of the primary controls which are the steering
wheel the brake and the throttle and for those of you in other parts of the world
or maybe taking your road test in a manual transmission it is also the
clutch mastery of these primary controls also teaches you where the vehicle is in
space in place how hard do I hit the brake how much do I hit the throttle
how much do I turn the steering wheel all of these
controls are in mastery of these controls is going to be learned through
doing slow speed maneuvers and Corey will put up the video on learn to drive
and there's some exercises in there that you can do that will teach you how to
use the primary controls individually and in combination because you need to
use the throttle in combination with the steering wheel you need to use the brake
in combination with the steering wheel and clutch and whatnot and all those
things so mastery of the primary controls you need to be able to do those
the other video Corey that you can put up for the smart drivers is the Ohio
manoeuvrability test that is a great video to teach you where your vehicle is
in space in place the next reason that students are unsuccessful on a road test
is because they fail in the category of observation as I've said for anybody who
watches me on the channel or it has seen me before the four key components of any
road test are space management speed management observation and communication
and observation is one of the challenges for many students you have to shoulder
check two times anytime you turn lane change or move the vehicle laterally
move it sideways you need to look down the road as far as possible you need to
manage the manage monitor your gauges haven't been a trouble getting that out
there you need to look out your rear window a rear window when you do when
you're backing up you need to do a 360-degree scan before you backup and
approximately every vehicle length you need to do another 360-degree scan so
you pause slow stop the vehicle do your 360 rescan and continue looking out the
back window when you're backing out and while you're driving down the road you
need to have a scanning pattern in place this is part of checking your mirrors
looking down the road and checking your gauges and whatnot so observation is
another reason that students are unsuccessful on a road test and this is
regardless of whether you're taking a motorcycle a bus truck or car license
you must have observation in place road signs
you must interpret road signs and incorporate the information that's on
the road signs into your driving this allows you to be both proactive and /
in the world of social driving I am of the very strong opinion that traffic
crashes occur because a driver or road user executes an unpredictable action on
the roadway and because it's unpredictable other drivers don't react
accordingly and therefore somebody gets into a crash so you need to adjust your
speed according to the signs if the lane ends you need to get into propria to
lane prior to that lane ending so you're not gonna get caught out you need to
come to complete stops at stop signs you need to adjust your speed and school
zone signs and you need to pay attention to road markings and have a look for
that for the video that I'm gonna put up on Wednesday had a question from a
student I'm sorry I had a question from a smart driver in California who asked
me why bike lanes are different than the video that I did and and it the clue in
that is the road markings so I'm going to go over that question with that smart
driver and make a video for Wednesday so have a look at that so road signs you
need to look at road signs you need to glean the information from the road
signs and incorporated into your driving so you're proactive and predictable when
you're driving along the roadway number five this is an automatic fail on a road
test is striking a fixed object and that's any time that you're driving
whether you're turning parking maneuvering doing slow speed maneuvers
or doing a three-point turn if you strike the curb you strike a concrete
barrier you strike another road user you strike another vehicle on the roadway
it's an automatic fail on a road test so know that so if you're reversed all
parking for example and there are concrete barriers behind the stall where
you're parking it's better to be a little bit far away from it than it is
to risk striking that concrete barrier because if you strike the concrete
barrier it's an automatic fail whereas if you're too far away it's probably two
points on demerits so it's unlikely you're gonna fail if you're too far away
however if you strike it it's an automatic fail so you need to
successfully and safely execute maneuvers doing the court during the
course of your road test number six dangerous action this again is an
automatic fail it's the same as striking a fixed object if you block an
intersection if the examiner intervenes for
reason if the examiner takes hold of the steering wheel and takes control of the
vehicle or puts the vehicle in neutral that's an automatic fail if you turn and
there's insufficient gap and you cause another driver to break so that you can
finish the manoeuvre you're gonna fail your road test your actions cause other
another road user to take evasive action for example you go around in a
right-hand turn and you failed a shoulder check and didn't see the
pedestrian and the pedestrian has to jump back on the curb that's an
automatic fail you fail to heed sign signals and road markings and take that
information in for example if you're on a four-lane road and you're in two lanes
in one of the lanes and and you don't see the sign you don't take in the
information and you end up right at the end and you get crunched in somewhere
because you didn't we weren't proactive and moving over early approximately a
block before the lane terminated then that is probably going to be a fail
because you weren't proactive on your during your drive all right Lane
positioning this is another reason that students failed and this comes back to
practice enough practice doing your slow speed maneuvers learning where your
vehicle is in space in place if you're moving move to the right after turning
left so when you make a left-hand turn you have to move over to the right-hand
lane almost immediately after executing that
left-hand turn if you don't do that consistently you're probably not going
to be successful on your road test for those of you so turning when you're
turning left you turn into the left-hand Lane and we're turning right you turn
into the right-hand Lane so left lane to left lane right to right lane merging
lane changes and moving the vehicle down the roadway all of this has to be done
with precision and with you having mastery of the steering wheel you need
to move the vehicle laterally so sideways when you're changing lanes and
those types of things and you need to communicate effectively when you're
changing Lane position so this is another reason that students are
unsuccessful on a road test so have this in place as well and I've got these
playlists up here as well changing lanes and choreo put that out for you so have
a look at those playlists those will really help you out in terms of where
you need to locate the vehicle on in the lane during your road
test okay finally the last one left-hand turns these cause challenges for
students taking road tests and little wonder why it's probably one of the most
dangerous maneuvers that you are required to do for the purposes of a
road test because you're crossing oncoming traffic and t-boned crashes are
often fatal because there's very little protection in the vehicle
so if there's a passenger in your vehicle it's on the video they're gonna
survive if there's any speed involved with the vehicle that t-bones you so you
need to have correct Lane positioning and I've been asked this numerous times
about Lane positioning and where you position the vehicle in preparation for
a left-hand turn I tell students to put the front steer tires on the front cross
walk line that way you're committed to the intersection but you're not in the
intersection if something goes wrong there are other driving instructors and
I would say it's a small percentage of driving instructors probably about 25%
of driving instructors that want you to move as far as you can into the
intersection I don't agree with that because if something goes wrong you're
in the intersection you're gonna get hit if you're back you're not in the
intersection if something goes wrong you're not gonna be in jeopardy and as
well when you do see the gap coming that you're going to use to make the turn you
can simply then start moving forward to the into the intersection and meet that
gap and then make your turn and this and this is a must if you're driving a
larger vehicle a bus or a truck alright so you block the intersection that's a
that's you're gonna be unsuccessful or if you commit a dangerous action you
turn and there isn't sufficient gap and other traffic has to stop in those types
of things so those are reasons some of the reasons why you're going to be
unsuccessful on a road test so good luck on your road test and keep in mind the
four major components of any road test speed management's base management
observation communication we can talk more about that and remember your job is
nothing more than to take away the examiners right to fail you and what you
need to demonstrate to the examiner is that you have due care and control of
the vehicle in changing traffic conditions that's
all you have to do you have to exercise due care and control the vehicle in
changing traffic conditions and that's what you need to do so we can talk more
about that we'll just head back over here to the live stream and answer any
questions that people might have there we go yes excellent
so okay so Stacy you have visual impairments what kind of visual
impairments do you have Stacy so if you have visual impairments the first thing
that I would recommend is is that you might need to work with you know some of
these driver rehab centers where the driving examiner works with an
occupational therapist and they can help you with disability that you might have
in terms of driving this was one of the things that we did when I worked at
Parkwood hospital in London Ontario is is that we worked with people who had
disabilities such as limited vision and actually Stacy if you if you good good
perfect vision in one eye actually Stacy I think for vision impairment it is
20100 you need to have 2100 vision or as you just said you need to have good
vision in one eye and what I okay so you have right eye blindness so you have one
eye so what that means Stacy is that you have poor depth perception is is that
you don't see things as far away and one of the things that you can do is you
need to look farther down the road you need to have more practice in
preparation for your road test and what I'll do Stacy is is I'll make a
concerted effort to get Jen's video up for you and that will really help you
out as well because I went down and helped Jen and Jen had twenty one twenty
one hundred vision so she had low vision as well and I helped her with that and
the other thing Stacy that you're going to need to do in terms to compensate for
your vision so just figure out some of the things that you're having difficulty
seeing so for example Jen had difficulty seeing the speedometer so what she did
was she went and got another speedometer GPS unit that had a very large
speedometer readout and she had that in the vehicle to compensate for her
difficulty seeing the speedometer some of the other thing is other landmarks
along the roadway look for those while you're driving anything that can help
you pinpoint where the roadway is we'll help you with that vision impairment
okay and if you have any other questions
Stacy by all means drop me an email and I'll help you out as best I can to get
you a license okay so Skylar's here manual Jaspal what
preparation I need after g2 for Giro test
okay so Jaspal what they're looking for in terms of your full G licence there in
Ontario is they simply want all the same things that you did for your g2 license
you know parallel parking reversed all parking three-point turns all of that
stuff is required for your full G licence they just want you to show a
higher level of ability in terms of driving your vehicle so they want it to
be efficient they want it to be smooth and basically what I might suggest to
you Jaspal is is that everything here on the channel will help you out in passing
your road test but I would recommend that you book a mock road test with a
local driving school and they'll be able to take you out and help you with that
okay now anybody else who's having
challenges with their road tester want to prepare for the road test passion
road test first time is available over at the smart drive test website it's
less than forty dollars it's so you can go over there and take that that will
give you everything that you need to pass your road test and it is guaranteed
if you don't pass your road test first time I'll give you your money back okay
there are a couple of stipulations one is you need to take a mock road test
with a driving school but it's there on the smart drive test website and Corey
I'll put the video up for you there as well 380 transmission being poorly used
of getting the gears engaged more than stalling only stalled twice excellent
okay 380 is it a fail on a test to miss a
shift missed a shift and I can cover or stall oh okay so 380 are you talking
about a big truck if you're talking about a big truck it's very unlikely
you're going to stall it if you have a miss shift they're not looking for you
in terms of you know they're not gonna dock demerits for miss shift I mean
unless you're doing it all the time what they're looking for in terms of a miss
shift is is can you recover from that for example CDL drivers here in Vernon
Hospital Hill we've had a few drivers who have lost
on Hospital Hill like they just didn't shift down correctly and the truck came
to a stop that's not an automatic fail on a CDL license it is an automatic fail
if you don't recover however if the driver simply stops the vehicle puts on
the four-way flashers and gets the vehicle going again
that's not an automatic fail you're gonna lose 20 or 30 you're gonna be
assigned 20 or 30 demerit points but you're not gonna fail your road test
okay so just know that that no miss shifts are not going to be a fail
salvadore thank you so much for your knowledge you're most welcome
salvadore and as well for those of you tuning in those watching on the replay
well those who watching the livestream super chat is available too as well and
we always appreciate donations these always greatly appreciate it so past my
class be excellent thank you so much Salvador for letting us know that's
great if you could go over and sign up for the hundred K campaign that would be
really great Cody alert lights not blinking greens
okay you guys have a conversation going on here
excellent so you're back Stacey awesome okay there Corey's got the link up for
the passion road test first-time Jaspal sir who is the right-of-way of four cars
from four directions on always stop at the same time okay so Jaspal it is the
first the first cargo arrived or the vehicle on the right as well Jess we'll
have a look at the 4-way stop video and you'll see that when 4-way stop interest
stop four-way stop sign intersections are busy the opposing lanes of traffic
take turns so if the vehicles are going straight through this way goes and then
this way goes this way goes and then this way go so they also all kind of all
alternate back and forth
okay so Tim is here and I left Tim so I was this morning at 5:30 basic Joomla
tutorials that's my bait Tim and yes I was down there this morning at 5:30 and
no I didn't nap on the ferry I drank coffee is it showing that I'm a little
bit hyper haha there we go all right yes Stacy they will do mock road tests
and if Sam jumps in here it's only about $25 for a mock road test and they will
give you feedback on your your driving ability and they will give you areas of
your driving that need more work so they'll tell you which they'll say
listen your right hand turns need more work they're too wide you need to signal
earlier you're not shoulder checking early enough or you're not doing it
enough they will give you back and give you feedback so for many students who
are struggling maybe just go and book a mock road test with the driving school
and you know that twenty five or thirty dollars is money really really well
spent and anybody going for a road test if you have any concerns about your
ability or your readiness for your road test go and book a mock road test with a
local driving school because the other thing is is um I can give you lots of
general information about road tests and I can give you most of what's going to
go on in terms of a road test but a local driving school is going to be able
to point out all of the nuances on the roadways in and around the test center
where you're going to be taking your test they know the roads that the
driving examiner's are going to be taking you on they know the roads we're
driving examiner's get you to parallel park they know the roads we're driving
examiner's do the parallel parking the two-point reverse turns the stall
parking in those types of things so they can give you the very specific
information that you need to be successful on your road test okay
got your and a few months back Marcus that's awesome Jeanette for parallel
parking we get three tries right do I use the same reference car for all three
trials am I allowed to use a different car okay so Jeanette I think somebody's
told you that you need to get parallel parking perfect no it doesn't have to be
perfect it just has to be good enough to pass okay as I tell students passing not
perfect we're gonna work on perfect for the rest of our life in terms of driving
I mean even I am still working on stuff and learning stuff okay so go for pass
okay just get it into the slot trying to line it up behind the vehicle in front
of you try and get it as close to the curb as
you can you know the sort of that six did nine inches that you need to do for
the purposes of that so and chanel is here and she's opening a new truck
driving school there in Texas and in Arlington Texas there so anybody in
Arlington Texas going for CDL license check that out and definitely sign up
there it definitely has my endorsement okay
yes three chances to correct yourself it's not likely if you're going to move
out and do another complete road test you're gonna be able to correct what
you're doing while you're trying to parallel park all right
Norwegian Blunt how many demerit points can you be given on a road test before a
fail I believe it's 45 demerit points Norwegian for a road test before you're
going to be unsuccessful on a road test so that's you know and it depends on
what happens so for example some things that you do say for example you Hill
Park you turn your wheels to the wrong way that's only gonna be two to five
demerit points if you do something drastic if you're too wide on the
right-hand turn or you moved into the wrong lane that could be ten or fifteen
demerit points so some things could cause you to accumulate demerit points
really quickly other things that could take quite a number of things before you
get demerit points but know that you don't want to demerit out okay and that
you're gonna be you know you need about less than forty five okay Rodriguez
thank you for all the videos I failed my road test a few months ago he said that
they didn't check three research degrees when I was doing my reverse and parallel
parking okay so Rodriguez are you going for another road test here soon
Marcia I'm broke can't pay for it no no Marcia you don't have to pay for it we
do appreciate if you can but it's all good I understand that we're all
struggling financially so we do appreciate any donations that you can
make alright so if anybody else other questions so again so I'm just
gonna talk briefly what I said during the presentation in terms of a road test
and for those here on the live stream and for those watching on the replay
you need to demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and control of
the vehicle at all times and changing traffic conditions that's essentially
what you need to do to be successful on your road test and under that definition
of what you need to do for the purposes of passing a road test you need to be
proficient in the four components of a road test regardless of where you are in
the world regardless of what class of license you are taking or regardless of
how old you are you must have speed management so you either the posted
speed limit or the flow of traffic whichever is less space management and
as I say to students if you're not near anything it's less likely that you're
going to hit something so stay away from other things okay so you need to have
the correct stopping position at stop signs intersections at the stop line
before the crosswalk line or sidewalk and then if there isn't either of those
then you need to stop at the edge where the two roads meet you need to have a
following distance of two to three seconds and you may need to stop in
traffic so that you can see the tires of the vehicle in front of you making clear
contact with the pavement so that space management for the purposes of a road
test observation you need to observe well while you're driving so you need to
have a scanning pattern in place when you're driving straight down the road
you need to look as far down the road as you can check your Center mirror far
down the road both shoulders in check your instrument gauge far down the road
in check your wing Mears and then repeat that every eight to ten seconds you need
to shoulder check twice for every turn so approximately half a block before the
turn mirror signal shoulder check and then shoulder check is just 90 degrees
every time you move the vehicle laterally any time that you make a lane
change you have to shoulder check when your reverse stall parking as one smart
driver just said and I apologize I don't remember go watch lots going on here in
the livestream you need to do a 360 view scan before you start backing up and
while you're backing up you need to look out the back window
the other thing that's on my list of videos to do and I get Cory to remind me
of this you need to keep your seatbelt on what you're backing up and look out
the back window so you need to turn and look out the back window you cannot use
a backup camera there's only one state in the u.s. that allows you to use a
backup camera keep your seatbelt on so that's observation 360 view scan
shoulder checks yeah I got all that and then finally you need to you need to
communicate effectively with other traffic your intentions on the roadway
to continue to be predictable and proactive so we communicate with other
road users with lights signals so blinkers and those types of things we
also use hand gestures all five fingers if you're gonna wave somebody on or
whatnot don't you know use the middle finger don't tell anybody they're number
one on a road test eye contact use of the horn however in this day and age
using the horn is tends to be a sign of aggression trying to help other people
out and then finally the position of your vehicle on the roadway indicates to
other road users what you're doing so if a vehicle is in the left-hand turning
lane there's a high chance that that person is probably going to turn left so
remember the position of your vehicle on the roadway it's gonna indicate to other
road users what you're doing okay so lots going on here
Jess excellent you're learning so much that's great okay
can you reverse back yes Jonathan when you're reversing you put your hand over
the passenger seat depending on what side of the car you're on in the world
so you put your hand over and then look back and you can use one hand to use the
steering wheel when you're reversing alright and Cody you like my shirt today
thank you so much I think it was the last clean shirt I had cuz I just got
back and and it wasn't all wrinkled because otherwise I would've had to get
the iron out I was being nostalgic the other day because last year my mom
bought me an iron for my for my birthday and I was when I was doing the video
this week I was actually I had to iron one of my shirts Jon recently got my
class one and have a road for a company next week is this common
any advice Thanks in Summerland excellent so you just down the road John
and yes it is very common when you go to work for a CDL company that you do a
road test and kind of interesting I've had lots of these road tests with
companies bus companies and truck companies that they take you up for road
tests they'll probably also want you to do a pre-trip inspection and remember
it's a work pre-trip inspection not a driving school pre trip inspection and
quarry I'll put the video for you on the 45-minute work pre trip remember that
most of the stuff you do in a driving school you know 45 minutes they're not
gonna let you do 45 minutes on a pre trip inspection they're only gonna let
you do about 15 minutes you know start you know open the hood check the oil do
a you know a dry check of the engine compartment then go in fire the engine
up turn your four-way flashers on turn your lights your high beams on go up do
a wet check of the engine close the hood up stand back from the front of the
vehicle check all the lights top the top top of the unit the lights are all
working flashing high beams are on go in turn your low beams on yes and then
start walking around the vehicle if you've got a tractor-trailer unit you
want to put air to the trailer as well and then start walking on the YouTube
bang all the tires check your fifth-wheel joints and then you know
check your cargo and those types of things your pre trip inspection and then
they're gonna take you out for a drive to make sure that you know in fact you
can drive in those types of things also they're gonna know that you're a new
driver so if your driving isn't perfect I wouldn't worry about it too much okay
Stacy absolutely and currently my van doesn't have one I always use my own eye
and not the camera excellent yes so you do have to look out the back window
Stacy when you're backing up now Stacy because of your visual impairment you
probably wear glasses as well and that is probably on your license is it not I
suspect it is okay and so therefore when you do go for your road test the driving
examiner is going to know that you have a visual impairment and that's gonna you
know that may give you some the driving examiner may give you some
concessions that doesn't mean that you don't want to be fully prepared you do
want to be fully prepared before you go down for your road test okay
Li's thank you so much Rick I am learning a lot my road test is next week
here in Spain yes and I saw that previously thank you for reminding me
excellent congratulations on getting ready for your road test next week
that's really great and be sure to drop back and let us know how you do there in
Spain and is the road test leash the more or less the same in Spain do you
have slow speed maneuvers that you need to be doing
you know reverse stall parking two point reverse terms three-point turns parallel
parking those types of things and just remind me I'm pretty sure that you drive
on the right side of the road in Spain you do drive on the right side of the
road in Spain you're not on the left side of the road like Malaysia and
Australia and the UK and other countries all right okay Belinda I recommend all
your videos to my son before he gets his road test excellent thank you so much
Belinda and if there's anything we can do to help your son be successful on his
road test by all means let us know one will help you out back up camera you
block it yeah you have to demonstrate you ability to look behind that's
exactly right Jonathan New Jersey is the only state that I'm aware of that does
allow you to use a backup camera on a road test otherwise you have to turn
around and look out the back window and again make sure that you do leave your
seatbelt on however for CDL drivers drivers of
trucks and buses you can take your seatbelt off when you're backing out
because you're just doing a lot more looking in those types of things and
that's the reason for the air in the reverse video because I was still
teaching CDL stuff at that time it didn't realize that no you can't take
your seatbelt off in a passenger vehicle thus the air in the video okay Cody my
dad has only one sight in one eye so yeah as trouble seeing sometimes while
on the road but it's not about perfection it's about progress yes it's
about passing the road test and as I said people with one eye don't
have the same depth perception as other people but you can learn to drive and
learn to drive safely you may have some limitations and we all know that you
know driving at night for example may pose challenges for people I
know a lot of people even people who are 20/20 vision still have trouble driving
at night they have trouble dealing with the glare from other vehicles and those
types of things you just simply need to learn techniques that will compensate
for that it's the same thing as Bruce Lee a lot of people don't know I mean
Bruce Lee was one of the greatest martial arts was greatest martial
artists in history marshal Bruce Lee was short-sighted in one eye and he had one
leg that was shorter than the other and a lot of people don't know that about
Bruce Lee so you know even though we have limitations we have challenges that
we need to overcome we can learn skills and strategies and techniques to
compensate for that and to make ourselves good drivers okay so yeah
Stacy I have a hard time at night yeah so the other thing what Stacy once you
get your license I mean obviously you're not going to be required to demonstrate
night driving skills for the purpose of your license which is great right but
after that you know if you do have to drive at night you can drive with
somebody else that can help you see the road and those types of things the other
thing I was thinking about this last night as I was driving not last night
this morning when it was still dark out driving along the padishah Bay highway
there on dan Cooper Island there's a cement barrier down the center of the
road and there's lots of reflectors and I was thinking that even though I
couldn't see the roadway I knew where the roadway was because of the
reflectors on both sides of the lane in which I was driving and I think many
drivers who haven't had this pointed out to them in terms of the reflectors are
not looking for the reflectors and and really even though they're there they
don't see them so the next time that you're driving at night for all the
smart drivers here watching on the livestream and for those of you tuning
in on the replay be sure to look for the reflectors along the roadway because I'm
going to say one thing about roads roads are not capricious there's your big word
for the day capricious means something that's going
to trick us right roadways are not there to trick us right Road engineers have
spent and they've had more than 120 years to build roads to the best design
for automobile drivers to keep them safe and there's lighting in place the
reflection in place there we now have tactile road surfaces with the rumble
strips along the side so that drivers fall asleep and go off the side of the
road and they hit the rumble strip the rumble strip will keep them awake so
Road engineers have perfected their skill and there's a lot of
infrastructure in place on roadways at night that will help you find the
roadway and that's really what you need to do because the lights on your vehicle
are a very poor substitute for you to be able to find the roadway at night even
especially on low-beam I mean low beam only only shines out about 30 meters
which is about a hundred feet you're never gonna get your vehicle if you're
doing 100 kilometres an hour 60 miles an hour you're never gonna get your vehicle
stopped in a hundred feet or thirty meters it's just on not impossible
so know that start looking for that infrastructure at night that will help
you to find the roadway reflective road markings road signs that are reflective
along the roadway those little reflectors that are placed on the top of
concrete barriers the rumble strips I mean if you hit the rumble strip big
deal but at least you know where the roadway is right overhead lighting those
types of things all of that will help you find the roadway at night okay Linda
I also need to work on my highway driving belinda where you probably said
at the beginning but just remind me where in the world you are and I'll be
able to give you a highway there okay Cody Racing car is a black felt on the
dashboard to reduce glare would you recommend getting some to use on the
road I'm having trouble seeing sometimes or is that overkill ah Cody that's a
probably a bit of overkill in terms of glare a couple of things that you can do
to help reduce fatigue and glare inside of the vehicle and this goes for
everybody here on the live stream and as well those who are tuning in it on the
replay turned down your dash lights because in these new vehicles the dash
lights look like a carnival yeah at night they're so bright and there's so
many different colors down there and what what tends to happen is is that at
night we have night vision what happens is our pupils dilate to bring in more
light and you've got this he's strong you know blaring light
coming off the instrument panel down here and what happens is your eyes are
constantly drawn down to that light when they need to be looking out the
windshield so if you can turn that down to as much as you can tolerate it's
going to be easier to look out the windshield as well there's a little tab
under the rear we're the center mirror push that down so that the vehicles
coming up behind you you don't get that glare off the mirror so those two
techniques will help you reduce the glare inside of the vehicle okay so do
so try those two things and see if that helps you out in terms of your night
driving ah Cody Cody Cody yes there we go okay we answered Cody Belinda's in
Toronto yes so if you're driving on the Gardiner Expressway you're on the 401
there and blended those types of things probably the easiest place to learn to
drive Belinda is on the Gardiner Expressway the 401 any of the 400
highways down there you know just get out at night and drive because the nice
thing Belinda about the 400 I know that you're doing 100 kilometres an hour
you're doing 60 miles an hour but the nice thing about it is is that the lanes
are clearly marked there's lots of overhead lighting and there's lots of
other traffic on there and this is this is the other point that I'll give you in
terms of night driving is follow the other traffic because for the most part
the other traffic is going to drive on the roadway right so you can look down
the roadway you can see the red taillights and you know where the
roadway is going and this is the biggest challenge with night driving is simply
knowing where the roadway is going and by following other traffic looking at
the reflective surfaces of the reflectors and the signs road markings
and those types of things all of that is going to help you out and improve your
driving and as well again with night driving as with any driving look farther
down the road and that will help you be able to find the roadway and be
proactive and predictable on the roadway
388 it can be easier on these big expressways to learn to drive at night
as opposed to trying to get out onto a you know two-lane road for example
highway 97 here in British but in the interior
British Columbia here from Vernon up to Kamloops that road at night is I
wouldn't recommend for a new driver some years ago when I first started driving
from the island back here to Vernon I come down there one night in the winter
and the winch and the the headlights had got glossed over and I come down that
road and I hadn't been down that road before and I was I was pretty put out
and I had been doing a lot of night driving to that point and it driven
trucks and had driven buses and those types of things and eventually what what
happened was as I ended up getting in behind a DC chambers truck which is when
it's one of the chip haulers trucking companies here in Vernon and that driver
went down that road and didn't touch the brakes all the way down there I was like
wow that's that's pretty incredible I mean now I'm familiar with the roadway
but I wouldn't recommend that is a place to learn how to night drive it's it's a
pretty windy twisty up-and-down two lane skinny as we call it in the trucking
industry okay Melinda ah you're most welcome leash there you go okay Geena
gust my driving test is a course so Jean where in the world are you taking your
driving test okay Norwegian how long do driving lessons usually last for are you
talking about Norwegian are you talking about a driving lesson are you talking
about a road test those are two different things
all right Darlene I will have my driver's test on April 10th I just want
to ask how would you know I will be at least six inches from the curb when I
parallel park I normally park a little far from the curb Darlene I wouldn't get
too hung up on how far you are from the curb if you are sort of 6 to 12 inches
from the curb you're gonna be fine and if you're a little bit farther than that
it's not going to be a big deal you're gonna you're gonna be a sign like 2
demerit points I wouldn't really get stuck on that as long as you're
comfortable and efficient with pulling out parallel parking and getting the
vehicle into the space I would worry more about that than how far you are
from the curb don't get hung up on that because that's
a very minor air and it has very little demerits
work on being skilful overall for your entire test remember what I said the
main the main job that you have to do for the purposes of your road test is
demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and control of the vehicle
in changing traffic conditions that's what they're looking for all right
okay so Jeanne you're in New Jersey okay so you're taking a course for your
driving test I hadn't I haven't heard of that before Jean that's that's new for
me okay Tommy todrick's excellent points practice on
the 407 if you can't afford it it's costly but I find that it's not as busy
like yourself I'm still working on highway driving there we go and that is
an excellent point Tommy yes the 407 is not as busy because it is a toll road so
there's less traffic there if you are on the busier highways you know the 401 and
those types of things try to go out when it's you know outside of the Russia
error times and the more in the afternoon and those types of things as
well so no that's an excellent point thanks Tommy
okay Kath I'm 51 and just got the nerve to go for my driving test and past your
videos helped immensely I'm still so nervous to drive by myself any tips on
making me a little more confident in my driving yes excellent congratulations
cap that is awesome news 51 years old and just got your license
congratulations that is an incredible achievement congratulations again so yes
one of the things I would suggest cat is just go for a drive
you know on a highway somewhere that's not very busy and you know you might
even consider you know if you you didn't wear just let me know where you are in
the world cat I can give you someplace that you could get on a roadway in those
types of things that won't be too busy for you but basically you want to take a
road trip you want to get out on a straight piece of Highway and you just
want to point the car down the road and you know sing along to some songs maybe
get an audio book and just go for a drive you know maybe take somebody with
you that already knows how to drive and they can kind of help you out and give
you some pointers and those types of things or if not go by yourself but you
just basically want to sit in the car you want to drive the car and you want
to be comfortable in a place where there is
a lot of traffic around that you're gonna have to deal with and you don't
want to be in town where you're dealing with a lot of lights and those types of
things just go for driving get comfortable it's like the same thing you
know I Drive to Victoria and I'm on the trans-canada highway it's a multi-lane
Highway and I'm just like pointing the vehicle down the roadway and I'm not
really dealing with traffic and it can be relaxing and it gets you comfortable
with the vehicle those types of things and kind of you know that same nothing
succeeds like success you know if you can drive out on the highway eventually
you're gonna move into more complex traffic situations and you know
introducing yourself into more challenging situations and as you do
that you build your confidence and become better at driving all right
Darlene always watching your videos thanks for answering my question you're
most welcome and if you have any questions at all Darlene more than happy
to help you out there we go Cody thank you for that ahh
Kath Barrie Ontario highway 27 my husband is getting tired of me dragging
him with me and he's a nitpicker yeah so Kath probably not best to take your
husband with you if you're in very there you know if you got a friend take a
friend with you somebody else that you mean you know maybe you can talk to or
somebody that can just you know give you some pointers and those types of things
you sir you certainly don't want somebody that you know we love our
spouses we love people who are significant to us but sometimes they're
not the best people to you know help us learn something I remember trying to
paddle a canoe and taking lessons and canoeing with with my significant other
so you know maybe that's something that you could do as well but you basically
you know want to get onto highway 27 and maybe just go for a drive for an hour or
so and then come back and you know as you get more comfortable in different
situations you know maybe just challenge yourself and those types of things so
yeah that's one of the things that you can do yes and they're 380 has a
suggestion that the 400 is a lot quieter and so you could do that as well no
region I was just wondering how long the driving lessons last my parents are busy
and don't have time to go driving with me okay so driving lessons Norwegian
generally tend to be an hour to 90 minutes it depends
on what you sign up for with the driving school excuse me yeah so it can be an
hour to 90 minutes depending on what the driving school what what lessons you
sign up for one arrangement you come to or agree to with the driving school so
you can kind of tailor it to your own needs and abilities all right in terms
of that okay excellent okay so Stacy mostly the wind but it is
that I went the highway for the first time and it was not good
yes it wasn't good the first time Stacy but remember it's gonna get better so
you're gonna you're gonna your skills are going to improve in those types
things all right so we're getting near the end here we're gonna answer a few
more questions in them we're gonna wind up here and I always recommend people
who go for the road test and you do pass your road test ensure that you go for a
road trip or you go to celebrate or something even if you drive down the
road 25 minutes to your favorite restaurant or you know your favorite ice
cream parlor or go for a walk on the beach or something like that
one of the things that we don't do is particularly in North America and you
know other places in the world is we don't take time to celebrate our wins
and what I would like us to do as smart drivers is to take time to celebrate
your wins so if you pass your road test take time out take a couple of hours
take half a day and go and celebrate that success because unfortunately as
you get older if you if you continue to go oh yeah a big deal I passed my road
test or big deal I did this or big deal I did that after a while it becomes kind
of you know life isn't exciting anymore and when you do celebrate those little
things what happens is is that you have these enabling objectives these little
steps that you are successful at and then the next thing you know you hit
this big target over here but only by celebrating all the little successes are
you able to attain the big one because if you don't celebrate all these little
steps along the way what happens in the middle is that you
get hum hum drum and kind of blase and you don't want to carry on anymore you
don't anymore motivation instead of turning around and looking back down the
path and go wow look at how far I've come so it's important to celebrate that
you passed your road test don't be looking for the next mountain to climb
because there's gonna be lots of mountains in life to climb but take a
few moments you know pat yourself on the back you know blow your own horn so to
speak and those types of things I know there's all kinds of social pressure to
not do that but it's important that you do it's important that we all do that we
take a moment and we say hey this is really great look what I did okay so do
that and I encourage that for people when when they do pass the road test I
always tell them to go and take a road trip and they sort of think that you
know it's a big road trip you know we got to pack the car up and go away for a
week no that's not what I'm saying just pack put a picnic in the car go
with your mom go with your dad to the beach for the afternoon and have a
picnic on the beach that's a celebration that's a road trip those are the types
of things I'm talking about when I tell you to take a road trip
okay so Stacey I celebrated buying my van then the registration of my days I'm
on the road learning excellence oh there we go
excellent 380 my family pushed me to get my four-wheeler license turns out their
plan was for me to drive them to Maine that's excellent
Belinda thank you again about tips and driving on the highway I felt relieved
driving on the highway now the weather is getting better excellent Cody I'm
very proud of the progress I've made through my first year of driving I never
considered myself a great driver I consider myself a safe and confident
driver I'd like to thank you Rick for your help you're most welcome Cody thank
you for letting us know that that's excellent
Sarah Cochran I'm 52 my road test is next Friday as soon as I pass I have an
888 mile trip ahead of me and I only attempted to drive on the highway twice
no freeway experience any advice yes Sarah we can definitely give you some
advice you know look as far down the road manage your space have a three to
four second following distance and don't let people get into your side space you
know have space around your vehicle because remember it's faster to drive
out of an emergency situation than it is to break however
you have to have space in which to drive so that's some good information there
Cody I always think it's me in my Honda CRV there you go excellent okay so we're
gonna wrap up Michael thanks Rick thank you Michael for showing up thank
you everyone else for showing up thank you for those who are watching on the
replay I wish you all the best congratulations to all of those who pass
the road test in the last couple of weeks good luck to those of you taking a
road test in the upcoming weeks if you have any comments at all if you like the
channel subscribe leave a comment and share it around all that helps us out
and we're gonna be having a huge celebration here in a couple of weeks
it'll be the unofficial 100,000 Kay party and then when we get the plaque
from YouTube we're gonna have the official celebration so thank you so
much all the best and remember pick the best answer not necessarily the right
answer have a great night bye now
