3 Simple Steps to Amazing Speaking in Public
3 tips for public speaking and television appearances So last night I was at Islam Channel I was on one of the shows there And I wanted to share with you something that I tell people who go on TV channels, who want to give speeches Because while I was there last night I was talking to the presenters between the show And one of the presenters said to me, "I feel very nervous about public speaking" And this is very surprising because the person is a TV presenter yet they feel nervous about public speaking And they said it's because when you're a presenter, you're kind of like the side guest Whereas the main person is the one that you're interviewing So when it comes to speaking, they were saying that they get quite nervous So I want to give you 3 tips that will insha'Allah help you when you're speaking to crowds, when you're on TV or radio or something like that So the first tip I want to give you is focus on the audience and not yourself Focus on the audience and not yourself Now most of the time when I do public speaking coaching, the problem is that the person is too focused on themselves They're like, "I've got a spot," "Look how long my beard is," "Look at my belly" If I start thinking about all of these things, then the focus is on me Really, what you need to do is you need to shift the focus from yourself and put it onto the value you want to give to your audience So the people that are watching the show, the people that are going to actually listen to your speech, or that are there for you, what value can you bring to them? How can you bring the best value? So you need to shift that focus away from thinking about yourself and start thinking about the audience and the value you bring to them And when you start thinking about them, you're not thinking about yourself and insha'Allah that will improve your performance So that's the first thing, which is shift your focus to the value you're going to bring to the audience The second thing is all about practice So practice is really, really important Now some people would say go out and give speeches and practice that way But I don't believe that you need to practice that way You can actually practice with yourself Like if I'm in a car now and I remember there was a big speech I wanted to deliver to my family I was very, very nervous about it What I did is I delivered the speech over and over again while I was driving So there's no one there to listen to me There's absolutely nothing But I'm just delivering over and over and over and over and over again So I think practice is really, really important because it helps you to prepare And you know competence, like once you get competent in doing it, competence breeds confidence So as you deliver it over and over and over and over again, you become more confident So it's really, really important that you practice So that you can get that level of confidence, which will help boost you as well insha'Allah And the third and final tip which is a really, really important one, especially if you're inexperienced it will really, really help you, is to tell stories Tell stories Now stories are actually 22 times more memorable than normal facts So it's really, really important that you tell stories What I would advise is that you choose stories about yourself You know everyone has gone through so many interesting things in their lives But they just forget You need to think about your stories which are relevant, and then start telling those stories Now when you tell stories, you need to think of yourself as a bit of an artist You need to think of yourself as someone who is going to paint a picture Because if I tell you something, Let's imagine I say, imagine standing outside a house, When you think about standing outside that house, the house in your mind may be different to the house in my mind, which might be different to the house in someone else's mind So what you need to do is you need to actually paint that picture so you start to get the same house So for example if I say to you, imagine a house which is detached, It has brown bricks, And it has yellow curtains, And a blue door Suddenly it's starting to get very clear in people's minds So when you're telling the story, make sure that you talk about the scene Talk about the plot Talk about the character Where they are at that moment Talk about the context of it all And then take them through the journey of the story And tell them what are the lessons, the things that happened and bring in emotion Like when you're telling the story, don't just tell them Live the stories Relive it So if you're feeling sad in that moment that you're telling about, then feel sad when you're telling it If you're really happy, then show excitement and be happy So these are 3 tips I really believe that if you just took these 3 things: The first one is about shifting focus to the audience The second one is practice and being prepared And the third one of telling stories It will transform the way you communicate, especially when it gets to TV, radio or speeches insha'Allah May Allah bless you May Allah make your communication easy for you and put barakah in it JazakAllah khayr for watching Assalaamu 'alaykum warahmatullah
