Hey guys in today's video I'm going to talk about two steps to brainstorm synthesis essay and I'm Vida. In the synthesis part, you will be given two pieces that usually have common theme or trait. Your task is to analyze how the similarities or differences contribute to the common theme. I will take this question as an example. Discuss the ways in which Hap, the dairy farmer in " The Soul of Capitalism." would likely response to Warhol's art as described in "When Canada met Andy." You must refer to both passages in your essay. You can find this question in the province exam website. Make sure to check this out before watching my video Step 1 Find the common theme to formulate your thesis. I have two videos that talking about how to find the theme in short story and poetry. Make sure to check them out before watching this one. First you have to find the subject matter. The two pieces are all talking about traditional art and modern art. Major theme is creative change is risky. Thesis statement is just to sum up the theme in one single sentence and answer the question. I will give you guys three impossible thesis statements. One creating something new and unconditional is risky and daring yet it can yield outstanding result .Hap won't appreciate Warhol's art. Two what one individual may call beautiful or a profound critique on modern society another may completely disregard. Hap won't appreciate Warhol's art. Three: This reflects upon the integral question in dealing with art – that is, is art the interpretation or imitation of reality? Hap won't appreciate Warhol's art. Step two: Show your analysis-- compare and contrast We have to list the similar characters in both pieces so Hap and Axel in the soul of capitalism and Charles Comfort and Warhol in "When Canada met Andy". Hap as a traditional art lover, he won't appreciate Axel's art. And we have to list evidence on how Hap won't appreciate Axel's art. Hap surprised about the $15,000 that Axel received for his sculpture in "The soul of Capitalism. He spent 15 minutes trying to make sense and appreciate Axel's sculpture. Although Hap recognizes the red stripe in the the abstract painting for what it is, "he called it something other than art. And then you can look at "When Canada met Andy. Charles Comfort does not think Warhol's art is art. And then you can compare the similar characters how Hap is like Charles Comfort. Well they're all traditional art lovers and they won't appreciate modern art. And you also have to compare how Axel is like Warhol's. Their art are all modern art. Axel's art is just to use red strips to build a sculpture---the soul of Capitalism Warhol's art just imitate life, use boxes and soup cans and replicate commonplace items and celebrities. Then you can infer that Hap won't appreciate Warhol's art. You have to write the compare/contrast process in your essay and list the evidence. For common mistakes in writing synthesis essay: First only paraphrasing without any analysis. Two only refer to one source, no synthesis. Do not write the synthesis like: in the first body paragraph refer to only one piece and in second body paragraph refer to another piece. You have to refer to both pieces all the time.
